A Treasure Hunt In Montmartre

Far from being a simple treasure hunt, the Secret of Montmartre invites you to take part in a real treasure hunt that finds its origins in the 18th century, during the French Revolution.
Between culture and fun, you will learn more about the history of the neighborhood while walking through the streets in search of clues!


a bit of history

In the 18th century, the Butte Montmartre was not yet part of Paris (it would only be attached to it in 1860).
The dynamic of the village is particularly turned towards religion, between the abbey and the church Saint-Pierre founded in the XIIth century by king Louis VI but not only.

Strategic location obliges, the heights of Montmartre sheltered the canons of different conflicts from the 16th to the 19th century.
It is also one of the triggering elements of the Paris Commune when in 1871, Adolphe Thiers decided to recover the canons acquired by the Parisians during the terrible siege of the city by the Prussians.

To return to our treasure hunt:
During the Revolution, the status of the Butte changed and the nuns were expelled in 1790, the abbey and its domain became national property and the destruction of buildings began in 1794.

But it is said that the 46th and last abbess of Montmartre, Marie-Louise de Montmorency-Laval decided to preserve the treasure of her abbey and that it would still be hidden under the Butte…
